Animal Testing
“If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson's eyes and ask him if it hurts.” (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/animal-testing)
- Ellen DeGeneres, My Point... And I Do Have One
With this quote Ellen DeGeneres is talking about how animal testing for the benefit of your skin care products is wrong. The animal has done nothing wrong so it doesn’t deserved to be poked at to just create some makeup.
“I remember one bobcat they had in here - now bobcats are an endangered species in this neck of the woods - they'd caught it somewhere and they must have put that cat through a dozen rounds of burn experiments before they finally determined that it was utterly useless to them. Like an empty beer can. And then you know what they did to it? Claudius was late for a lunch date so rather thanput the destroyed but still breathing animal to sleep, he picked it up by its hind legs and simply smashed its head against a wall repeatedly until it was dead. How can I forget it: I was the one told to clean up the mess. The head dented in. The eyes slowly closing. The once proud claws hanging down, stunned and lifeless, the utter senselessness of it all, and the hate, a hatred that was consummated in me which is as dangerous a hormone, or chemical, or portion of the brain, as any neutron bomb. Except that I didnt know how to explode. I was like a computer without a keyboard, a bird without wings. Roaring inside. I wanted to kill that man. To do unto others what they had done unto me. I was that bobcat, you better believe it.” (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/animal-testing)
- Michael Tobias, Rage and Reason
This experience is one I’d never want to go through: cleaning up a deceased animal that is endangered. Rather than putting the animal down to sleep they murdered the bobcat and put it in pain. Animal testing is already enough as it is, but murdering an endangered animal is too far.
"From the discovery of antibiotics, analgesics, anti-depressants, and anesthetics, to the successful development of organ transplants, bypass surgery, heart catheterization, and joint replacement, practically every present-day protocol for the prevention, control, and cure of disease is based on knowledge attained through research with laboratory animals...
Animal research has also paid incalculable benefits to animals. It has resulted in many remarkable lifesaving and life-extending treatments for cats, dogs, farm animals, wildlife, and endangered species. Pacemakers, artificial joints, organ transplants, and freedom from arthritic pain are just a few of the breakthroughs made in veterinary medicine thanks to animal research. Dogs, cats, sheep, and cattle are also living longer and healthier lives thanks to vaccines for rabies, distemper, parvo virus, hepatitis, anthrax, tetanus, and feline leukemia. New treatments for glaucoma, heart disease, cancer, hip dysplasia, and traumatic injuries are saving, extending, and enhancing the lives of beloved pets while advanced reproductive techniques are helping to preserve and protect threatened and endangered species." - The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) stated in its article titled "Benefits of Biomedical Research," available on the FBR website (accessed Oct. 24, 2013):
I can understand how some individuals are for animal testing when it can benefit us, but not the animal. Animal testing can provide us with skin care products and also find cures to diseases.
"Animal research has improved the health and welfare of animals and humans. The decline in death rates in the United States from heart disease and stroke since the 1960s is due to lifestyle changes and new methods of treatment and prevention, many of which are based on animal research." - Americans for Medical Progress (AMP) stated in its article titled "Animal Research," posted on the AMP website (accessed Oct. 24, 2013):
This statement has shown to be true because due to animal testing, scientists have found more cures and ways to treat disease
Animal Testing
This is a chart showing some of the animals being harmed for some skin care products and medical reasons.
Why animals? What did the animals do to deserve being poked and prodded for skin care products or for the cure/treatments of disease and disorder. We are continuing to hurt or kill and animal for the benefit of ourselves. As Ellen DeGeneres said: “If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson's eyes and ask him if it hurts.” (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/animal-testing) and with that, I completely agree with her. Why continue to harm something that has done nothing wrong. In some countries there is no law against it, in opinion there should be a law passed against it. Now, there are substitutions that can be made for skin care, we don’t need to harm. We can use skin care products without harming an animal. (https://paintedinblack.wordpress.com/tag/animal-testing/)
